Civic artworks are often temporary, multidisciplinary, steeped in color theory and implement public engagement instigating multicultural interaction.
Media: Wood, faux wood, screws, PVC pipe, and acrylic paint
Dimensions: 82” H x 50” W x 50” D and 76” H x 44” W x 44”D
Location: Leonel Castillo Community Center, Houston, Texas
The colorful sculptures created by Art Uniti team Tami Moschioni and Nicola Parente were assembled during a twenty-minute outdoor dance performance choreographed by The Pilot Dance Project’s Artistic Director, Adam Castaneda. The collaborative creation of this new public artwork was inspired by responses from a community survey about the significance and cultural history of the Near Northside. Similarly, the dance work was created based in response to Art Uniti’s interest in shape, color, and place-making relating to Northside. "Weaving Northside", at its core, is a celebration of the people, places, and spirit of one of Houston’s most beloved communities.
"Weaving Northside" funded in part by a 2020 Support for Artists and Creative Individuals grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance and made possible thru partnerships with The Pilot Dance Project, Baker Ripley Lionel Castillo Community Center, Greater Northside Management District, Avenue, Houston Metropolitan Dance Center, Historic Near Northside Civic Club, and fiscal sponsor Fresh Arts. Additional funding comes from the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Dance Source Houston GroundWorks grant.
